Preview: Caramel (2008)

Poster: C+

Review:

Completely masking the film's subject by making the movie look like it's either A) a film about brothels or B) a sequel to Chocolat. Neither assessment fits. The colors are pleasant enough, but it's completely divergent from the trailer.

Trailer: C

Review:

Watching the trailer, I'm reminded heavily of Steel Magnolias. Caramel looks as if its taken most of its ideas straight from the 1989 tearjerker, right down to the friendly, corner hair boutique to the medically ill character. The only difference discernable from the preview is that it's set in Lebanon and features Lebanese actresses.

Oscar Prospects:

This isn't Chocolat. It's not Steel Magnolias. Similarities aside, this isn't an Oscar kind of film.

Release Date:

February 1, 2008
