Preview: Persepolis (2007)

Poster: B

Review:

Heavily reminiscent of the 60s and early 70s, this poster is engaging, but overly simplified. It tells us nothing about the story and barely introduces the characters. However, at least it's better than other similarly-styled posters that put live-action actors on top of animated backdrops.

Trailer: A-; B+

Review:

Although Persepolis looks like it could be depressing the way most Holocaust films are, it's intriguing and involving in a way that other Middle East-set films have not been.

Choosing many of the same shots and images from the first trailer, the notable standout here is the lead character singing "Eye of the Tiger". She's not a gifted singer, but it easily conveys her sense of freedom as she escapes from her past life subjugated by her cultural heritage.

Oscar Prospects:

Being double placed in Foreign Language Film and Animated Film categories, Persepolis could suffer a cruel fate and be ignored by both committees. The former may ignore it since they will believe it to be a contender for Animated Feature while the latter may choose another film because of a similar reaction. It could be the first film in history to earn nominations in both categories.
