Preview: Stephen King's The Mist (2007)

Poster: B
Review:
The first poster for the film seems to graphically stimulating to be associated with the film. It belies the human drama that's featured in the preview and looks more like Poltergeist than a Stephen King story.
Trailer: B; B
Review:
What a starkly different style for Frank Darabont! We know he has a fascination for all things King, but this is the first story by Stephen King that is horrifying instead of mysterious. Both The Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption have some very poignant story elements that are often vacant in King's work. Everything from the trailer for The Mist suggests that Darabont's moved onto the darker psychological horrors from the humanistic.
This second preview further expands the story and makes it even more evident that there's some bug problem going on. While, I would normally be doubtful of this kind of story and suspect it to be a flop, Darabont has delivered mediocre and fantastic versions of King's stories...and there's a moral imperative at the heart of the preview that makes it seem more interesting.
Oscar Prospects:
Maybe some tech considerations, but I doubt the film will appeal to anything beyond the minute minority of horror enthusiasts in the Academy (you know, the ones who can't ever get horror nominated for awards?).
