(3/22/98) The Independent Spirit Awards gave out their awards. Not a good precursor of the Oscar because of its focus solely on independents.
(3/15/98) Titanic sails on. This past weekend, Titanic carried past Star Wars to become the highest grossing film in Domestic boxoffice history. It also carried away the American Cinema Editors Award for Best Film Editing.
(3/9/98) Another precursor goes to Titanic. Gary Rydstrom, Tom Johnson, Gary Summers and Mark Ulano have taken home the Cinema Audio Society's equivalent to the Best Sound Oscar.
(3/9/98) There was some talk that Kundun could win the Oscar out from under Titanic in Cinematography. However, the American Socitey of Cinematographers has announced its award to Russell Carpenter for Titanic, giving it the power to win.
(3/8/98) An interesting evening with a somewhat surprising win for Robin Williams and Helen Hunt. The shocking win of The Full Monty for Best Ensemble. Not to mention a tie for Best Supporting Actress to Kim Basinger and Gloria Stuart, the leads for the Oscar. Then there was Jack.
(3/7/98) James Cameron picks up the ultimate guarantee of a best director Oscar. Only 4 times in DGA history has the award for best director at the Oscars and the DGA winner not agreed.
(3/4/98) Titanic pops way into the lead with its capture of the Producers Guild of America's award for Best Picture. The PGA has been in existance for several years and has only failed to predict Best Picture twice. In 1992 with its choice of The Crying Game and 1995 selecting Apollo 13.
(3/3/98) The best forecaster for the Art Direction Oscar, The Society of Motion Picture and Television Art Directors (SMPTAD) chose Peter Lamont's production design for Titanic as its best. Titanic should have no problem winning.
(3/1/98) The Chicago Film Critics followed suit selecting L.A. Confidential for Picture, Director and Screenplay. Titanic captured two pivotal awards in Cinematography and Music, while Robert Duvall was aided by an award for best actor. Judi Dench also got some help capturing her fourth prize for best actress. Burt Reynolds received another feather for supporting actor, while supporting actress went to the unnominated Debbi Morgan.
(3/1/98) Titanic walked away with a record 14 Online Motion Picture Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actress. If the OMPA is a good precursor as it was last year, we could see them predicting the winners of the Oscars. Titanic continues to steam ahead.
(2/22/98) Titanic walked away with seven Satellite Awards, including Best Picture - Drama. This sets the film in faster motion towards getting the Oscar. It also took Director, Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing, Original Score and Original Song. Surprise loses came in the categories of Cinematography, where it lost to Amistad and Visual Effects, where it lost to Contact. Contact didn't get the Oscar nomination, so Titanic could easily take home that award. Overall, however, the awards seem likely to mirror the Oscars with the possible exception of Actor and Supporting Actress.
(2/21/98) The WGA awarded its Top prizes for Original Screenplay to Mark Andrus and James L. Brooks for As Good As It Gets (Likely a runners-up prize for Brooks losing the Oscar director nomiantion), and Brian Helgeland and Curtis Hanson for L.A. Confidential, the hands-down favorite to win the Adapted Screenplay Oscar.
(2/9/98) The Online Motion Picture Academy announced its nominations today, there are far too many to place here, just check out this link: OMPA. What does this mean? Not a lot as yet, the organization is presenting only its 2nd annual awards. If the organization is at all predictive, look for a Titanic sweep, the film captured a record-breaking 22 nominations, 5 more than last year's record setter Evita.
(2/9/98) The American Cinema Editors shine a light on Best Film Editing, giving four of the five major contenders for Best Picture a good shot at the Editin Oscar. Air Force One is the only film that doesn't have a shot at the Oscar and with the way the Oscars change up to one nomination from the ACE to theirs, expect AFO to be the one ousted from the list.
(2/5/98) Original Screenplay is easily moveable to the Oscars, the WGA generally agrees there, but when it comes to Adatped Screenplay, the two organizations generally differ. As Good, Boogie, Titanic and Good Will Hunting will carry over their Original Screenplay nominations. Full Monty coulf find itself in the dust. In Adapted, however, Only L.A. Confidential, The Ice Storm and Wag the Dog are locks. The other two slots will be battled between Donnie Brasco, The Wings of the Dove, Contact, The Sweet Hereafter and Jackie Brown, with the last two the likely nominees.
(2/5/98) A surprise nominee from the American Society of Cinematographers in the selection of The Boxer. The Boxer will likely be the film that is left out when the nominations come out, the Academy tends to leave out one or two nominees when they do their own awards.
(1/27/98) Damon, Duval, Fonda and Nicholson create nominations locks while Dustin Hoffman moves up in the Actor race. Carter, Dench and Hunt cement nominations while Grier and Winslet hold onto strong hopes for nominations in Actress. Hopkins, Kinnear, Reynolds and Williams create nomination locks while Billy Connolly pulls up to the front for the remaining Supporting Actor slot. Basinger, Moore and Stuart pull up to supporting actress with Driver and Elliott pulling into closer contention for the remaining two slots.
(1/26/98) Being a new organization, the IMCA doesn't really have much of a prediction record, it's choices appear to be sound and quite astute as each of their choices appear to be locks for nomination. The sole winner that could face an uphill climb to a nomination is Jodie Foster, the field is tough, but she still remains a front runner.
(1/26/98) The Director's Guild of America announced their nominees today. The five directors represent the films nominated for the Laurel awards. This holds well for each nominee, giving a lock to James Cameron, Curtis Hanson and James L. Brooks. Spielberg is considered to be a contender based on previous Academy transgressions. Van Sant remains the only unknown, the Academy generally strays by one from the DGA nominations and this is the best place to do it, giving it to Atom Egoyan or Ang Lee would be likely, but with this nod, Van Sant becomes more of a front runner.
(1/19/98) The Southeastern Film Critics showed absolutely nothing new, following the pack of critics to L.A. Confidential, but its win of the Golden Globe eclipses any future announcements until the Laurel Awards make their big Announcement.
(1/19/98) The selection from the final finalists for the Broadcast Film Critics Awards was announced today and given to L.A. Confidential. However, it's director nod to James Cameron shines light on Titanic indicating that it may have run a VERY close second in the final ballot.
(1/18/98) Titanic's 4 trophies add to its momentum, not to mention its position at the Top of the weekend box-office for the 5th consecutive week. Its win for Best Picture is more of a lock now than ever before. Look for every winner in every category tonight to be locks for nominations now that everything is said and done.
(1/17/98) The Chicago Film Critics Nominations are Out. As are the Producers Guild of America, one of the BEST predictors of the Best Picture category. Their choices match my predictions exactly and I don't anticipate the final result to differ much.
(1/13/98) The Internet Movie Critics Association, another new Online film critics association debuted itself with its first nominations in several categories. Some predictable selection, but over-all a veried mix. I'm partial since I founded the organization. The Online Film Critics Society went sheepishly with the crowd selecting L.A. Confidential best picture as well as many other copycat selection, save for giving Gloria Stuart Supporting Actress against two actress nominated for the wrong films. Sound Effects Editing and Visual Effects finalists for the Oscars are in. Check the Hopefuls page to see them and a spot of commentary.

(1/9/98) Today's Additions of the Independent Spirit Awards and Florida Film Critics marks a major winding down of the Critics Awards. There are a few left, but Florida is one of the last few. This year's IS Award nominees are very varied and very unlikely to turn themselves into Oscar nominations. Only Robert Duvall's Apostle, Eve's Bayou and Julie Christie in Afterglow will truly benefit from these nominees. Florida is primarily a rehash of other critics awards and holds no new insights into the nominees.
(1/5/98) What can be seen as only a critical lock for L.A. Confidential, the National Society of Critics voted the film Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. All three of these categories now carry an Oscar nominations lock for the film. Two other Oscars locks as a result are for Supporting Actor nomination for Burt Reynolds and a Cinematography nomination for Roger Deakins of Kundun.
(12/30/97) The Society of Texas Film Critics, not always known for being able to predict the Oscars have strayed from the other critics groups and given Picture to Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Herafter. This sudden shift may be due to Sweet's snubbing by the Golden Globes. This, however, does not guarantee it a Best Pictre slot. The field is too crowded and Sweet Hereafter has not shown in more than half of the country. Cusack and Bonham Carter both look like guarantees, Robert Duvall pushes towards a nomination and Kevin Spacey finally gets an award for L.A. Confidential. However, this will not get him a nomination, because it was combined with his work in the not-celebrated Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Another feather in Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland's hat towards a Adapted Screenplay nomination. Neil LaBute's screenplay for In the Company of Men could also ride high to a nomination, but at this time, no one is certain.
(12/23/97) The Broadcast Film Critics Announced their awards and Titanic is still a contender, with the director prize going to Cameron. Other guaranteed nominees are: Jack Nicholson, Helena Bonham Carter, Joan Cusack and Anthony Hopkins. As well as Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting and Adapted to L.A. Confidential.
(12/18/97) With Titanic being as big as it was in both the Satellites and the Golden Globes, along with Amistad's garnering, both films stand great Oscar nominations chances. Jackie Brown's chances have dwindled with a pitance of nominations, Wag the Dog saw significant signs of approval as did The Boxer, but both will find it hard to get nominations come Oscar time. As Good As it Gets and Good Will Hunting performed well in both awards nominations and should carry that potential to the Oscars.
(12/16/97) The Satellite (by Hollywood Foreign Press splinter group The International Press Academy) nominations have been announced. Other than Titanic leading the pack with 12 nominations, Amistad - 9 and Boogie Nights - 8, no other notice has been made. I hope to have that full list here soon.
(12/15/97) L.A. Confidential has so far swept the Critics awards. Only one other film has done that in recent memory and it took home the Oscar, Schindler's List. Boston wasn't terribly innovative and nor are they really looked on all that highly as a precursor, still, one more slot for Picture, Writing and Directing to L.A. Confidential and another award to Helena Bonham Carter, put them all in the front.
(12/14/97) With the Los Angeles film critics awards, L.A. Confidential moves into the front-runner position for the Oscars. Also moving into major contention are Jack Nicholson, Helena Bonham Carter and Burt Reynolds.
(12/11/97) Today's announcement of the New York Film Critics Circle Awards gives L.A. Confidential a strong footing and a shot at the Picture Oscar. Peter Fonda goes for career gold and is assisted by the annoucement. Julie Christie, previous Oscar winner, won Top honors and could get a boost, but its a tough field, a second trophy will help her up. Reynolds is nearly a shoo-in for Oscar with his supporting actor win and Joan Cusack might find herself in Oscar's light.
(12/10/97) With yesterday's announcement of the National Board of Reviews Awards, it looks bad for Amistad, but better for L.A. Confidential and Titanic. Titanic pulled into their Top 10 at No. 5, which could boost the film towards an Oscar nomination, however, limited critical support means that Amistad may be left in the dust. Only time will tell, and there are still more critics to come! Another strong point is As Good As It Gets. With Critical support like that, Jack could get a 3rd Oscar.

(3/22/98) The Independent Spirit Awards gave out their awards. Not a good precursor of the Oscar because of its focus solely on independents.
(3/15/98) Titanic sails on. This past weekend, Titanic carried past Star Wars to become the highest grossing film in Domestic boxoffice history. It also carried away the American Cinema Editors Award for Best Film Editing.
(3/9/98) Another precursor goes to Titanic. Gary Rydstrom, Tom Johnson, Gary Summers and Mark Ulano have taken home the Cinema Audio Society's equivalent to the Best Sound Oscar.
(3/9/98) There was some talk that Kundun could win the Oscar out from under Titanic in Cinematography. However, the American Socitey of Cinematographers has announced its award to Russell Carpenter for Titanic, giving it the power to win.
(3/8/98) An interesting evening with a somewhat surprising win for Robin Williams and Helen Hunt. The shocking win of The Full Monty for Best Ensemble. Not to mention a tie for Best Supporting Actress to Kim Basinger and Gloria Stuart, the leads for the Oscar. Then there was Jack.
(3/7/98) James Cameron picks up the ultimate guarantee of a best director Oscar. Only 4 times in DGA history has the award for best director at the Oscars and the DGA winner not agreed.
(3/4/98) Titanic pops way into the lead with its capture of the Producers Guild of America's award for Best Picture. The PGA has been in existance for several years and has only failed to predict Best Picture twice. In 1992 with its choice of The Crying Game and 1995 selecting Apollo 13.
(3/3/98) The best forecaster for the Art Direction Oscar, The Society of Motion Picture and Television Art Directors (SMPTAD) chose Peter Lamont's production design for Titanic as its best. Titanic should have no problem winning.
(3/1/98) The Chicago Film Critics followed suit selecting L.A. Confidential for Picture, Director and Screenplay. Titanic captured two pivotal awards in Cinematography and Music, while Robert Duvall was aided by an award for best actor. Judi Dench also got some help capturing her fourth prize for best actress. Burt Reynolds received another feather for supporting actor, while supporting actress went to the unnominated Debbi Morgan.
(3/1/98) Titanic walked away with a record 14 Online Motion Picture Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actress. If the OMPA is a good precursor as it was last year, we could see them predicting the winners of the Oscars. Titanic continues to steam ahead.
(2/22/98) Titanic walked away with seven Satellite Awards, including Best Picture - Drama. This sets the film in faster motion towards getting the Oscar. It also took Director, Art Direction, Costume Design, Film Editing, Original Score and Original Song. Surprise loses came in the categories of Cinematography, where it lost to Amistad and Visual Effects, where it lost to Contact. Contact didn't get the Oscar nomination, so Titanic could easily take home that award. Overall, however, the awards seem likely to mirror the Oscars with the possible exception of Actor and Supporting Actress.
(2/21/98) The WGA awarded its Top prizes for Original Screenplay to Mark Andrus and James L. Brooks for As Good As It Gets (Likely a runners-up prize for Brooks losing the Oscar director nomiantion), and Brian Helgeland and Curtis Hanson for L.A. Confidential, the hands-down favorite to win the Adapted Screenplay Oscar.
(2/9/98) The Online Motion Picture Academy announced its nominations today, there are far too many to place here, just check out this link: OMPA. What does this mean? Not a lot as yet, the organization is presenting only its 2nd annual awards. If the organization is at all predictive, look for a Titanic sweep, the film captured a record-breaking 22 nominations, 5 more than last year's record setter Evita.
(2/9/98) The American Cinema Editors shine a light on Best Film Editing, giving four of the five major contenders for Best Picture a good shot at the Editin Oscar. Air Force One is the only film that doesn't have a shot at the Oscar and with the way the Oscars change up to one nomination from the ACE to theirs, expect AFO to be the one ousted from the list.
(2/5/98) Original Screenplay is easily moveable to the Oscars, the WGA generally agrees there, but when it comes to Adatped Screenplay, the two organizations generally differ. As Good, Boogie, Titanic and Good Will Hunting will carry over their Original Screenplay nominations. Full Monty coulf find itself in the dust. In Adapted, however, Only L.A. Confidential, The Ice Storm and Wag the Dog are locks. The other two slots will be battled between Donnie Brasco, The Wings of the Dove, Contact, The Sweet Hereafter and Jackie Brown, with the last two the likely nominees.
(2/5/98) A surprise nominee from the American Society of Cinematographers in the selection of The Boxer. The Boxer will likely be the film that is left out when the nominations come out, the Academy tends to leave out one or two nominees when they do their own awards.
(1/27/98) Damon, Duval, Fonda and Nicholson create nominations locks while Dustin Hoffman moves up in the Actor race. Carter, Dench and Hunt cement nominations while Grier and Winslet hold onto strong hopes for nominations in Actress. Hopkins, Kinnear, Reynolds and Williams create nomination locks while Billy Connolly pulls up to the front for the remaining Supporting Actor slot. Basinger, Moore and Stuart pull up to supporting actress with Driver and Elliott pulling into closer contention for the remaining two slots.
(1/26/98) Being a new organization, the IMCA doesn't really have much of a prediction record, it's choices appear to be sound and quite astute as each of their choices appear to be locks for nomination. The sole winner that could face an uphill climb to a nomination is Jodie Foster, the field is tough, but she still remains a front runner.
(1/26/98) The Director's Guild of America announced their nominees today. The five directors represent the films nominated for the Laurel awards. This holds well for each nominee, giving a lock to James Cameron, Curtis Hanson and James L. Brooks. Spielberg is considered to be a contender based on previous Academy transgressions. Van Sant remains the only unknown, the Academy generally strays by one from the DGA nominations and this is the best place to do it, giving it to Atom Egoyan or Ang Lee would be likely, but with this nod, Van Sant becomes more of a front runner.
(1/19/98) The Southeastern Film Critics showed absolutely nothing new, following the pack of critics to L.A. Confidential, but its win of the Golden Globe eclipses any future announcements until the Laurel Awards make their big Announcement.
(1/19/98) The selection from the final finalists for the Broadcast Film Critics Awards was announced today and given to L.A. Confidential. However, it's director nod to James Cameron shines light on Titanic indicating that it may have run a VERY close second in the final ballot.
(1/18/98) Titanic's 4 trophies add to its momentum, not to mention its position at the Top of the weekend box-office for the 5th consecutive week. Its win for Best Picture is more of a lock now than ever before. Look for every winner in every category tonight to be locks for nominations now that everything is said and done.
(1/17/98) The Chicago Film Critics Nominations are Out. As are the Producers Guild of America, one of the BEST predictors of the Best Picture category. Their choices match my predictions exactly and I don't anticipate the final result to differ much.
(1/13/98) The Internet Movie Critics Association, another new Online film critics association debuted itself with its first nominations in several categories. Some predictable selection, but over-all a veried mix. I'm partial since I founded the organization. The Online Film Critics Society went sheepishly with the crowd selecting L.A. Confidential best picture as well as many other copycat selection, save for giving Gloria Stuart Supporting Actress against two actress nominated for the wrong films. (1/9/98) The Online Film Critics Society is a fledgling organization of film critics across the internet. Their nominations are listed below.
(1/9/98) Today's Additions of the Independent Spirit Awards and Florida Film Critics marks a major winding down of the Critics Awards. There are a few left, but Florida is one of the last few. This year's IS Award nominees are very varied and very unlikely to turn themselves into Oscar nominations. Only Robert Duvall's Apostle, Eve's Bayou and Julie Christie in Afterglow will truly benefit from these nominees. Florida is primarily a rehash of other critics awards and holds no new insights into the nominees.
(1/5/98) What can be seen as only a critical lock for L.A. Confidential, the National Society of Critics voted the film Best Picture, Director and Screenplay. All three of these categories now carry an Oscar nominations lock for the film. Two other Oscars locks as a result are for Supporting Actor nomination for Burt Reynolds and a Cinematography nomination for Roger Deakins of Kundun.
(12/30/97) The Society of Texas Film Critics, not always known for being able to predict the Oscars have strayed from the other critics groups and given Picture to Atom Egoyan's The Sweet Herafter. This sudden shift may be due to Sweet's snubbing by the Golden Globes. This, however, does not guarantee it a Best Pictre slot. The field is too crowded and Sweet Hereafter has not shown in more than half of the country. Cusack and Bonham Carter both look like guarantees, Robert Duvall pushes towards a nomination and Kevin Spacey finally gets an award for L.A. Confidential. However, this will not get him a nomination, because it was combined with his work in the not-celebrated Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Another feather in Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland's hat towards a Adapted Screenplay nomination. Neil LaBute's screenplay for In the Company of Men could also ride high to a nomination, but at this time, no one is certain.
(12/23/97) The Broadcast Film Critics Announced their awards and Titanic is still a contender, with the director prize going to Cameron. Other guaranteed nominees are: Jack Nicholson, Helena Bonham Carter, Joan Cusack and Anthony Hopkins. As well as Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting and Adapted to L.A. Confidential.
(12/18/97) With Titanic being as big as it was in both the Satellites and the Golden Globes, along with Amistad's garnering, both films stand great Oscar nominations chances. Jackie Brown's chances have dwindled with a pitance of nominations, Wag the Dog saw significant signs of approval as did The Boxer, but both will find it hard to get nominations come Oscar time. As Good As it Gets and Good Will Hunting performed well in both awards nominations and should carry that potential to the Oscars.
(12/16/97) The Satellite (by Hollywood Foreign Press splinter group The International Press Academy) nominations have been announced. Other than Titanic leading the pack with 12 nominations, Amistad - 9 and Boogie Nights - 8, no other notice has been made. I hope to have that full list here soon.
(12/15/97) L.A. Confidential has so far swept the Critics awards. Only one other film has done that in recent memory and it took home the Oscar, Schindler's List. Boston wasn't terribly innovative and nor are they really looked on all that highly as a precursor, still, one more slot for Picture, Writing and Directing to L.A. Confidential and another award to Helena Bonham Carter, put them all in the front.
(12/14/97) With the Los Angeles film critics awards, L.A. Confidential moves into the front-runner position for the Oscars. Also moving into major contention are Jack Nicholson, Helena Bonham Carter and Burt Reynolds.
(12/11/97) Today's announcement of the New York Film Critics Circle Awards gives L.A. Confidential a strong footing and a shot at the Picture Oscar. Peter Fonda goes for career gold and is assisted by the annoucement. Julie Christie, previous Oscar winner, won Top honors and could get a boost, but its a tough field, a second trophy will help her up. Reynolds is nearly a shoo-in for Oscar with his supporting actor win and Joan Cusack might find herself in Oscar's light.
(12/10/97) With yesterday's announcement of the National Board of Reviews Awards, it looks bad for Amistad, but better for L.A. Confidential and Titanic. Titanic pulled into their Top 10 at No. 5, which could boost the film towards an Oscar nomination, however, limited critical support means that Amistad may be left in the dust. Only time will tell, and there are still more critics to come! Another strong point is As Good As It Gets. With Critical support like that, Jack could get a 3rd Oscar.
